LONE SENTINEL ELM TREE The Lone Sentinel is an elm tree that stood in Bayne Park for approximately 400 years. The crown of the tree spread 320 feet as it reached 110 feet in height. In May 1998 a wind storm tore a large branch from the sourthern side of the tree. The 'branch' weighed several tons. The tree was out of balance with the loss of this much mass and the trunk began to split. After several more sections were taken out of the tree it had to be taken down in 1998. The stained glass window on the stairwell of the library depicts the tree as it stood as a symbol in Bellevue. |
